Costs,no gap andhealth funds.

Bring your health fund card: we claim through HICAPS when you pay, so you only pay the gap. Kids under 12 pay no gap for a clean when they’re on extras cover that includes dental. Ask the front desk which funds this applies to. For anything else, we tell you the cost before treatment starts.

The short answer.

A check-up and clean

Ask the front desk for the fee; you’ll have a quote before anything starts. With extras cover, your fund pays part or all of it (see no gap, below).

Your health fund

Bring your card and claim on the spot through HICAPS. You pay only the gap.

Bigger treatment

We explain your options and what each costs before anything starts, so you can check with your fund first.

How we quote.

The same steps for one filling or a full set of dentures.

  1. We look first.

Your dentist examines your teeth and takes X-rays only if they’re needed. We’ll tell you before we take any.

  2. We explain your options.

What each option involves and what it costs, including what happens if you wait.

  3. You check your rebate.

Ask us for the item numbers for your treatment. Your fund can use them to tell you your rebate before you decide.

  4. You decide.

Nothing goes ahead until you say yes. Take the time you need.

No gap, explained.

“No gap” means you pay nothing out of pocket for a listed service, because your fund pays its usual benefit and we don’t charge the rest.

  • For children under 12.

Kids under 12 pay no gap for a clean when they’re on extras cover that includes dental. Ask the front desk which funds this applies to.

  • For adults.

It depends on your fund and level of cover. Call us with your fund’s name and we’ll tell you what you’d pay for a check-up.

  • When no gap applies.

You have extras cover that includes general dental, annual limit left and any waiting period served, and the item is on your fund’s no-gap list, as often as it allows.

What’s in a check-up, by item number.

Funds pay item by item. These are the numbers a check-up usually uses.

Using your
health fund.

How claiming works at our front desk.

A Dental Spot dentist going through X-rays with a patient

Claim on the spot.

Bring your health fund card. We claim through HICAPS when you pay, so you only pay the gap.

Your rebate depends on your cover.

Your fund decides what it pays, based on your level of extras cover, your annual limits and waiting periods. Some funds class larger fillings as major dental.

In your fund’s network?

Some funds pay more when you see a dentist in their network. Ask the front desk whether we’re in yours.

Limit used up?

The full fee applies until your annual limit resets. Your fund can tell you what’s left.

Not sure what your cover includes? Call your fund with the item numbers for your treatment.

The Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS).

We accept the Child Dental Benefits Schedule. Children aged 0 to 17 may be eligible if their family receives Family Tax Benefit Part A or another relevant government payment. Benefits are capped (currently $1,158 over two calendar years for periods starting in 2026) and do not cover orthodontic or cosmetic treatment. We check eligibility and your remaining balance before treatment.

Call us to check your child’s eligibility and how we bill it.

You can check your child’s remaining balance in your Medicare online account through myGov.

Children’s dentistry at Dental Spot

Medicare and public dental.

Most dental care for adults isn’t covered by Medicare. Here’s what is.

Medicare

Medicare doesn’t cover most dental care for adults. For children, the Child Dental Benefits Schedule (above) is paid through Medicare.

NSW public dental

NSW public dental services treat children under 18 and adults with a Health Care Card, Pensioner Concession Card or Commonwealth Seniors Health Card. Waiting times depend on how urgent your care is.

NSW Health vouchers

We accept NSW Health dental vouchers. Bring yours to your appointment.

Your first
visit.

We’ll ask about your dental history and what’s on your mind, examine your teeth and gums, and talk through your options. Your dentist may suggest X-rays.

Bring your health fund card, a list of the medicines you take, and any recent X-rays from another dentist.

Is Dental Spot a no-gap dentist?

For children under 12, yes for a clean, on extras cover that includes dental; ask the front desk which funds. For adults, it depends on your fund and level of cover: call us with your fund’s name and we’ll tell you what you’d pay for a check-up.

What does “no gap” mean?

You pay nothing out of pocket for the listed services, because your fund pays its usual benefit and we don’t charge the rest. It only applies while you have extras cover, annual limit left and any waiting period served.

How much is a check-up and clean without insurance?

Call us and we’ll tell you the current fee. It depends on whether you need X-rays and how much cleaning your teeth need.

Do X-rays cost extra?

Yes. X-rays are separate items, 022 for each small X-ray and 037 for a panoramic X-ray of the whole mouth (OPG), and your fund may pay part. We only take them if they’re needed, and we tell you first.

Do you have HICAPS?

Yes. Bring your health fund card and we’ll claim for you when you pay, so you only pay the gap.

Which health funds can I use?

You can use your health fund card with HICAPS here. What you get back depends on your fund and your level of cover. Ask us whether we’re in your fund’s network.

Does Medicare cover dental?

Not for most adults. Children in eligible families can be covered under the Child Dental Benefits Schedule, and adults with some concession cards can use NSW public dental services.

Are children’s check-ups bulk billed?

Children in eligible families can have check-ups covered under the Child Dental Benefits Schedule, up to a cap. Call us to check your child’s eligibility and how we bill it.

How can I pay?

By credit card, EFTPOS or direct transfer. Bring your health fund card too: we claim through HICAPS when you pay, so you only pay the gap.

Can I pay in instalments?

Talk to our front desk about ways to pay for your treatment. Ask whether it can be done in stages, so the cost is spread out and across more than one year of fund limits.

Will I know the cost before treatment?

Yes. We explain your options and what each costs before treatment starts, so you can check with your fund first.

What if my fund’s annual limit is used up?

The full fee applies until your limit resets. Your fund can tell you how much you have left and when it resets.

Why is going to the dentist so expensive?

Most adult dental care sits outside Medicare, so patients pay most of the cost themselves, directly or through extras cover (Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, Oral health and dental care in Australia). We explain your options and what each costs before anything starts, so you can decide what to do now and what can wait.

Do you bulk bill?

Medicare doesn’t cover most dental services, so there’s no Medicare benefit to bulk bill (Services Australia). For children using the Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS), ask the front desk how we bill it.

Can I use my super to pay for dental treatment?

Only in limited cases, if the ATO approves an early release. Read “Access to super on compassionate grounds” on the ATO website before you apply: the ATO recommends waiting for approval before you book treatment. Ask us for a written quote to work from.

Ask us what it will cost.

Leave your number. Our front desk will call you back with the fee and the item numbers to check with your fund.

Dental Spot collects your name and phone number so our front desk can call you back. Please don’t include health details here; we’ll talk about that when we call. We don’t share it with anyone else, apart from the email service that delivers it to us. You can ask to see or correct it. Read our privacy policy.
